Everyone is interested in leadership, but what specifically makes an authentic or great leader? Find the top characteristics here.

There is no one universal definition of leadership. There are, however, similarities in most great leaders. Here are the top five characteristics of leaders worthy of the faith placed in them by those who follow. One of the most basic truths about genuine leaders is that their successes are always visible. Successful leadership isn't a matter of esoteric value judgments, but observing that the words and actions of a person are in nearly perfect agreement.

Leaders have willing followers

People choose to follow leaders because they have a choice. Having no choice but to follow is the definition of coercion not followership. Leaders do not dominate, they inspire. There is also a big difference between a leader and a pusher. Leaders are not judged to be the lesser of two evils; leaders are deemed to be the most worthy.

Leaders deliver on every single promise they make

No matter what it takes, a worthy leader always fulfills his or her promises. The word "excuse" is not in their vocabulary, although they recognize one that comes out of someone else's mouth. Leaders understand their situations and possibilities and express them openly and honestly. Being willing to stand on principle, walk forward to create change, or do battle are decisions based on character and not guaranteed outcomes. Big time leaders always have big time goals.

Leaders never take a coffee break from responsibility

Excellence requires that leaders always speak truth, and always have a back-up plan ready when circumstances change or results are not as expected. The authentic leader can always be counted on to be there for his or her followers regardless of weather, personal comfort, or time of day,

Leaders work with vision and purpose, and have more commitment to their goal than anyone else

Authentic leaders have very high standards. The person whose performance is evaluated most narrowly is their own. Followers are never expected to do more than the leader does. Leaders set the bar by example, not by directives.

Leaders work to improve those they lead, with a purposeful plan to increase confidence and ability in their followers

Teachers are expected to teach and trainers to train. Military commanders must deliver victories while still doing all they can to develop, promote, and protect those in their units. Confidence is enhanced by overcoming failures and creating success in goal achievement and subordinate growth.Leaders don't spend time on "me" issues. They maintain focus on the prize, responsibility, and authority over those who follow. Leaders don't stay in the same place, they create movement and positive change. Leadership is characterized by action.

Philosophers merely think - leaders thoughtfully act.
